Joan (Lake) Baycroft

January 19, 1934 - June 27, 2022 (age 88)

On June 27, 2022, Joan Baycroft of Ottawa, Ontario died peacefully at home, aged 88 and surrounded by her family.

She will be remembered by John, her husband of 67 years, and her children: Michael (Barb), Sally (Michael), and Anne (Derek); grandchildren Jessica, and John (Jeannie); and her many friends.

Joan grew up in Yorkshire and trained to be a nurse at The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. In 1955 she married John Baycroft. Together they emigrated to Canada and had three children and numerous cats. Over their 67 years of marriage, they lived in Sydenham, Perth, and Ottawa and considered the Ottawa Valley home. As a clergy and bishop’s spouse Joan was deeply involved in parish life.

Joan and John travelled extensively and enjoyed living in Rome, London, Sicily, Heidelberg and the Algarve. Some of Joan’s happiest times were at the family cottage and working in her gardens. She regularly attended and supported the Stratford Festival and the National Arts Centre. Joan had a degree in art history from Carleton University and felt fortunate to visit some of the greatest art galleries in the world.

There will be a visitation on Tuesday, July 5, from 7 to 9 pm, at the Westboro Chapel Tubman Funeral Home, 403 Richmond Rd (at Roosevelt Ave.), Ottawa.

A funeral service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 414 Spark St., Ottawa, on Wednesday, July 6, at 10 am after which the family will take Joan to her final resting place at Elmwood Cemetery in Perth.

Memorial donations can be made in Joan’s name to the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) or Cornerstone Housing for Women.

The family is deeply grateful to Dr. Eric Wooltorton of the Ottawa Hospital and the many members of Joan’s palliative care team for all their support.
